About
The Sachs Foundation
The Sachs
Foundation was incorporated as a Colorado, non-profit corporation
in 1931 and since that time has helped nearly 7,000 Black, Colorado
resident obtain a college education. We provide scholarships to about
200 students each year, who attend 80 educational institutions throughout
the United States. We select approximately 50 new applicants per
year.
Our selection
process starts with the BLACK/AFRICAN-AMERICAN, FIVE YEAR MINIMUM
RESIDENT OF COLORADO REQUIREMENT. The Sachs Foundation endeavors
to award scholarships equally to male and female applicants as
reasonably determined in conjunction with the variances in cumulative
high
school grade point averages and financial need. We then screen
all applicants for their high school, weighted, cumulative GPA.
Those
applicants that meet our requirements are required to attend a personal
interview with the Board of Directors on a Saturday in April. The
Board individually approves each grant. In 2006, the average, undergraduate
grant was $4,000.00 a year. This amount could vary depending upon
fund availability.
The GPA
cut-offs vary depending upon the number and mix of applications,
the number of vacancies and the funds available for scholarships.
Selection
is also strongly based on demonstrated financial need, as established
in the submitted financial statement, which is part of the application
form. Recently the GPA cutoff is 3.6.
The Sachs
Foundation also has a very limited graduate grant program. Selection
for a graduate grant is on a case by case basis by the Board of
Directors.
Only
current Sachs Foundation scholarship recipients who are receiving
an undergraduate grant are eligible for graduate scholarships.
Selection
is based
on
undergraduate
performance, need and consideration of the applicant area of study
and life goals. There is a three year window to apply after graduating
from undergraduate school, but the applicant must not now or in
the past be attending a graduate school.
Each
applicant for a graduate grant must have graduated from college
and submit a graduate grant application form to the Board of Directors.
Only the most promising candidates for graduate degrees are selected
and we are limited to the total number of graduate scholarships allowed
each year.
In 2006,
the graduate grant was $5,000.00 per year and can continue for up
to four years if all our requirements for continuation are met.
